Business strategic management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Business strategic management - Essay Example 4). They were so focused about directly creating revenues and profits and there was little understanding on how to generate competitive advantage in particular. In years were competition is becoming fierce in the global business, competitive advantage is a must. A company should aim to be a cut above the other. It is in this reason that strategic planning is necessary. Corporate strategies are needed. In the midst of tough competition, companies could not afford to drop their chances to move in the right direction. Thus, businesses are able to grasp once again the importance of strategic management. They are once again trying to sort out their business by cows, dogs, stars and question marks. However, this seems to be classical in nature. The strategic management comes back with substantial interaction with customers and suppliers. In other words, the saturated focus on production approach just to be able to achieve higher revenues and profits was gone.

The Effect of World War and other World Events on the Development of Sport Essay Example for Free

The Effect of World War and other World Events on the Development of Sport Essay World War 2 effected the development of sport more dramatically than any previous world event/war, simply because it was a totally different war, civilians were in danger as well as the soldiers, due to the new style of fighting. WW2 was a much more mobile war then any other war as it was the first time when bombing was really introduced on a large scale; meaning that even if you were a civilian hundreds of miles away from the brunt of the fighting you could still be attacked from the air. This meant that you could never play sport out in the open in complete safety as bombing raids could come at any time; civilians had other more pressing matters no their mind other than playing and developing sport. Also PE in schools was set back considerably due to many PE teachers being enlisted into the army and many were used to train military personnel. Any PE that was taught in school was mainly based around individual initiative and survival rather than the concepts on sport. PE taught during the Second World War is very different to the conventional PE that we know now, although it had educative intentions, the practical side of it was predominantly physical training, rather than learning how to play particular sports. Four things mainly effected the changes that occurred in the inter-war syllabuses. The first influence being F.J.C Marshal and E. Major who published several books, they wanted to increase the importance of skill learning and the use of apparatus (possibly to make practical PE lessons more like the army style of training, i.e. assault courses etc). The next influence was the publication of female physical educationists. Veronica Tyndale-Biscoe (1945) described modern dance as using the body as a medium of expression. Similarly a gymnast Ruth Clark (1946) suggested that working on apparatus at his own value has particular value to the timid child, who gains courage through the discovery for himself of his own capabilities. So they also believed that apparatus should be used, but in such a way that children would learn about their sporting strengths and weaknesses themselves. The third influence was C.E. Cooke who extended F.J.C. Marshall and E. Majors views, by actually bringing new army apparatus into schools after seeing them in use by commandos in the Northern Command Physical Training School; she believed the children would enjoy the skill and adventure provided by the apparatus. Even though she thought the children would enjoy the skill it was still mainly aimed at physical training rather than the skills of playing sport. The last main influence of the inter-war syllabus was a woman named Miss Dudgeon, who was working at a children rehabilitation clinic. PE had always been aimed at making children react to a set task. But she believed in setting open tasks where children could respond in their own time. So sport at a PE level was affected significantly by the Second World War, but sports them selves were affected by the war as well. There was a 12-year gap between the 1938 World Cup in France and the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. The Olympics also had to be cancelled due to the Second World War as in July of 1939, just one year before the Games were to be held, The IOC awarded the Games to Helsinki, Finland. Helsinkis organizing committee prepared for the Games, but when Finland was attacked by the Soviet Union in November, they had to withdraw. The IOC (International Olympic Committee), realizing the futility of trying to find a venue for the Olympics during what would come to be known as World War II, abandoned the idea of holding the Summer Games in 1940. The 1936 Olympics were also affected by the up and coming war as the games were manipulated by the Nazi government to promote the countries political ideals. Many Germans were imprisoned so they couldnt disrupt the games. Only Germans of Hitlers so call Aryan race were allowed to compete for Germany. This had a huge affect on the game as other Germans were banned from taking part. Not only did the war effect sporting competitions that were going to happen, but also many sports players were enlisted into the army and died in battle, and therefore crippling many sports of their star players and teams. Other events have also affected sport in quite a large way; the most recent being the terrorist acts that happened on September 11th 2001. As a result of this the 2001 Ryder Cup, which was due to be played at The Belfry in England was called off, and rescheduled with the same teams and players for September 2002, again at The Belfry. All Champions League and UEFA Cup games were postponed and the Davis Cup tie between USA and India was played 12-14 October instead of its original date. The tragedy of September 11th had a big affect on sport and the athletes competing just as all other past world events have. Foot and mouth was a disease which hit England quite badly in terms of sport, as not only did it postpone professional sports but even more so amateur sports, for example most Sunday football leagues were basically stopped because of the disease spreading so rapidly. The team I played for at the time had half of their season cancelled due to our home ground being next to a farm. Also all inter school competitions were cancelled due o the outbreak. Foot and mouth effected professional bowls when the British Isles International indoor series was postponed, and the World Indoor Championships were also postponed by foot and mouth. Nearly all sport fixtures in Ireland were postponed due to the outbreak of foot and mouth, in particular games during the 6 nations cup had to be postponed, for example international matches between England and Ireland were rescheduled. There have been many events which have hindered the development of sport but it seems the societies want to play them and to play them in competition has kept sport alive, in such a way that governing bodies have been formed to increase the level at which we play. Even games like darts and snooker which might be consider as pub games have become into professions for some people. Polio :: essays research papers

Poliomyelitis, infectious virus disease of the central nervous system, sometimes resulting in paralysis. The greatest incidence of the disease, also known as infantile paralysis, is in children between the ages of five and ten years. The disease was described in 1840 by the German orthopedist Jacob von Heine. In its clinical form it is more prevalent in temperate zones. Symptoms The virus usually enters the body through the alimentary tract and spreads along nerve cells to affect various parts of the central nervous system. The incubation period ranges from about 4 to 35 days. Early symptoms include fatigue, headache, fever, vomiting, constipation, stiffness of the neck, or, less commonly, diarrhea and pain in the extremities. Because nerve cells that control muscular movement are not replaced once they are destroyed, poliovirus infection can cause permanent paralysis. When nerve cells in respiratory centers, which control breathing, are destroyed, the victim must be kept alive by an iron lung (see Artificial Respiration). For every paralytic case of poliomyelitis, however, there may be 100 nonparalytic cases. Treatment Because no drug developed so far has proved effective, treatment is entirely symptomatic. Use of moist heat coupled with physical therapy to stimulate the muscles was first initiated by the Australian nurse Elizabeth Kenny, and antispasmodic drugs are administered to produce muscular relaxation. In the convalescent stage, occupational therapy is used. Disease Control Three broad types of the virus have been identified: the Brunhilde (type 1), Lansing (type 2), and Leon (type 3) strains. Immunity to one strain does not furnish protection against the other two. Poliomyelitis control was made possible when, in 1949, the American bacteriologist John Franklin Enders and his coworkers discovered a method of growing the viruses on tissue in the laboratory. Applying this technique, the American physician and epidemiologist Jonas Salk developed a vaccine prepared from inactivated poliomyelitis viruses of the three known types. After field trials in 1954 the vaccine was pronounced safe and effective, and mass inoculation began. The American virologist Albert Sabin subsequently developed a vaccine containing attenuated, live polio virus that could be given orally.

Involvement Of K+ In Leaf Movements During Suntracking :: essays research papers

Involvement of K+ in Leaf Movements During Suntracking Introduction   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many plants orient their leaves in response to directional light signals. Heliotropic movements, or movements that are affected by the sun, are common among plants belonging to the families Malvaceae, Fabaceae, Nyctaginaceae, and Oxalidaceae. The leaves of many plants, including Crotalaria pallida, exhibit diaheliotropic movement. C. pallida is a woody shrub native to South Africa. Its trifoliate leaves are connected to the petiole by 3-4 mm long pulvinules (Schmalstig). In diaheliotropic movement, the plant’s leaves are oriented perpendicular to the sun’s rays, thereby maximizing the interception of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). In some plants, but not all, his response occurs particularly during the morning and late afternoon, when the light is coming at more of an angle and the water stress is not as severe (Donahue and Vogelmann). Under these conditions the lamina of the leaf is within less than 15 ° from the normal to the sun. Many plants that exhibit diaheliotropic movements also show paraheliotropic response as well. Paraheliotropism minimizes water loss by reducing the amount of light absorbed by the leaves; the leaves orient themselves parallel to the sun’s rays. Plants that exhibit paraheliotropic behavior usually do so at midday, when the sun’s rays are perpendicular to the ground. This reorientation takes place only in leaves of plants that are capable of nastic light-driven movements, such as the trifoliate leaf of Erythrina spp. (Herbert 1984). However, this phenomenon has been observed in other legume species that exhibit diaheliotropic leaf movement as well. Their movement is temporarily transformed from diaheliotropic to paraheliotropic. In doing so, the interception of solar radiation is maximized during the morning and late afternoon, and minimized during midday. The leaves of Crotalaria pallida also exhibit nyctinastic, or sleep, movements, in which the leaves fold down at night. The solar tracking may also provide a competitive advantage during early growth, since there is little shading, and also by intercepting more radiant heat in the early morning, thus raising leaf temperature nearer the optimum for photosynthesis.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Integral to understanding the heliotropic movements of a plant is determining how the leaf detects the angle at which the light is incident upon it, how this perception is transduced to the pulvinus, and finally, how this signal can effect a physiological response (Donahue and Vogelmann).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the species Crotalaria pallida, blue light seems to be the wavelength that stimulates these leaf movements (Scmalstig). It has been implicated in the photonastic unfolding of leaves and in the diaheliotropic response in Mactroptilium atropurpureum and Lupinus succulentus (Schwartz, Gilboa, and Koller 1987). However, the light receptor involved can not be determined from Involvement Of K+ In Leaf Movements During Suntracking :: essays research papers Involvement of K+ in Leaf Movements During Suntracking Introduction   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many plants orient their leaves in response to directional light signals. Power Line Communication Essay

The objective any mining company like TATA STEEL is to reduce the amount of energy used in mining through the increase in employee productivity and safety. Mining operations consist of several tasks. The highest efficiency can only be achieved with full coordination among the persons carrying out these tasks and if the locations of vehicles and people are known by those who coordinate the activities. In addition, the large number of risks of explosion has the potential to cause a major accident. Therefore, the establishment of a better communication system for the mine underground is very important and significant to modernize the mine management, increase the labour productivity, and strengthen the security to protect the lives and property of the mines. Present Scenario At present, cable telephone communication, power line communication, sensor communication, telecommunication, leakage communication, and radio communication are the main forms of communication in a mine. Our study shows that, a variety of mobile communication methods have their limitary application under coal mine. Some mines still use hardwired wall-mounted telephones. The disadvantage of this technology is the obvious necessity that the user cannot be mobile. To reach this person, the caller must page the person who must then go to a wall-mounted telephone that may be a long distance away and in the case of an accident the telephone may be inaccessible to the injured person. Another popular technology , Leaky Feeder technology requires a relatively stiff,hard-to-install cable, about 5/8† in diameter, to be installed everywhere where communication is desired. To communicate the user must be in line-of-sight of the cable and not more than thirty or eighty feet away from the cable. According to a survey conducted on how well current systems meet the needs for mining communication, 62 percent of Respondents replied negatively. None of them thought that mining communication needs were being met extremely well. Some of their replies- â€Å"Overall we cannot communicate well with miners.† â€Å"There is the issue of battery, phone and wiring maintenance.† â€Å"Safety in an emergency is still an issue.† As the power lines in an underground mine cover a broad area, if we can make full use of power lines to communicate, then we can completely solve the problem underground communication. The use of power lines saves the cost of additional cable and the labour cost for system installation. Furthermore, power lines are built and installed in a rugged manner. Any underground wire or cable, when fed an RF signal, tends to distribute that signal throughout its length. Carrier current systems utilize this fact to establish communication paths using existing mine wiring. Carrier current devices are basically FM radio transceivers that transmit and receive over existing mine wiring instead of using an antenna system. The LF (low-frequency) and MF (medium frequency)KP ranges propagate best in carrier current systems. A common example of a carrier current system is the trolley carrier phone systems presently used in many mines. Another example is the shaft communication systems that utilize the hoist rope itself to establish communications to and from the cage. The most modern system, based on MF, promises to be the most effective of a l l . But there are lots of complex interference noises in power line communication under mine. More recently, the maturity of wireless as an accepted medium has increased the demand for instant, reliable, portable communication. Underground mines, however, have proved resistant to wireless communication due to environmental conditions that limit the transmission of radio waves. â€Å"Mines are looking to find such a system. It would become universal over time due to safety, a decrease in down time and an increase in productivity.† This system may be further enhanced to A GPS-like (Global Positioning System) for underground mines which would serve an extremely useful function in saving energy in mining operations. Autonomous (i.e. unmanned) machinery has been a long-standing objective of the mining. This would move miners from underground mines to the surface from where they would remotely control mining operations. Extremely important is to note that such a move would allow shutting off the energy-guzzling fans, which would result in large amounts of energy savings. Economics PLC is viewed as especially attractive because of several characteristics. Electricity services in most developing countries have higher reach than telephony. In addition, PLC can provide an elegant solution for in-home access and networking, since the signal can reach virtually any outlet in the home. However, there are several important technical issues in this simple scheme. The signal attenuates as it goes over the line, with higher losses at higher frequencies. Given emission limits that restrict boosting the transmission signal, the only solution is the use of repeaters en-route, increasing the cost. Secondly, the LV transformers act as a low-pass filter, allowing electricity through with low losses but not higher frequencies. This is why most solutions rely on bypassing the distribution transformer. While an opportunity in terms of sharing capital equipment costs across users, shared infrastructures also lead to congestion, multiplexing, interference, and security concerns. To overcome these issues, PLC solutions rely on sophisticated signal processing and encoding. For PLC to be successful, it must not only operate successfully from a technology point of view, but also present a viable business case. The market space consists of not only well-entrenched alternatives like DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and cable, but also alternatives such as Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH), Fiber-To-The-Curb (FTTC), and broadband wireless. Issues of telecom, regulation and competition play a vital role in deciding the future of PLC. Depending on the number of feeders emanating from the substation, different MV couplers are needed. At every distribution transformer, a concentrator cum transformer bypass is required. This device transfers the signals to the medium-voltage line, bypassing the transformer. In addition, depending on the distances involved, repeaters might be needed to extend the signal. In addition to the one-time costs, which are amortized over specific periods, there are also explicit calculations of monthly operating costs. After thorough estimation from various sources (web and consulting some industry people) the monthly costs of PLC is found to be around US$35 per month per user. Most of the values chosen are plausible, if not optimistic. In some hazardous locations, where specialized personnel are required, installation costs have been estimated at US$200–300. On the other hand, in normal cases, the installation would be somewhat over US$100 per user . The total capital costs per consumer (excluding Customer Premises Equipment (CPE)) average about US$85 , assuming an average of 6 homes passed per LV transformer. One result that is robust across most assumption ranges is that operating expenditures are about 45% of the total costs. The most important variable, under the assumptions is the time period for paying off of the equipment. Given the fast changing nature of the telecom industry, the median value for economic purposes is assumed to be 5 years. In addition, within a region, the competitive pressures might be much lower, allowing for higher market share and greater sharing of equipment, marketing, and maintenance costs amongst subscribers. Given the estimated monthly costs of PLC it is almost clear that there is a gripping business case for PLC in the near term based on price for the end-user. Of course, economics is not the only factor in determining the success of PLC or any other broadband technology. User satisfaction, customer loyalty, branding, and competition (alternatives) are all important factors as well.

Introduction Of Work Life Balance Social Work Essay Essay Example

Introduction Of Work Life Balance Social Work Essay Essay Example Introduction Of Work Life Balance Social Work Essay Essay Introduction Of Work Life Balance Social Work Essay Essay Work life balance in its wider facet, is defined as an equal degree of part between the assorted functions in a individual s life. While definitions and accounts differ, work life balance is normally related with balance, or keeping an in general sense of synchronism in life. The survey of work life balance comprises of the rating of people s capableness to get by at the same clip the multilateral burden of life. Work Life Balance: Work life balance expresses the association between your work and the dedications in the staying of your life, and how they can coerce on each other. Foremans, authorities and direction want to capitalise on engagement in the work force. Nevertheless, in our disputing lives many people thrash about to equilibrate work and the family undertakings of sort for kids, household members with a disablement or aged parents. For farther workers it s frequently slippery to turn up clip exterior work for survey, volunteering, taking attention of their ain fittingness or take parting in games and avocation. There is no perfect work life balance. Everyone is unlike and the right balance may alter over clip as households grow large and personal committednesss modify. The switching economic fortunes and societal burden have changed the character of work all over the universe. Initially work was a topic of indispensable and endurance. During the old ages, the function of attempt has evolved and the composing of the labour force has altered. Nowadays, work is by and large viewed as a cause of personal pleasance. A good equilibrium in work and life can play a exceeding function in the accomplishment of personal and skilled ends The intent of this paper is to understand the a assortment of issues that have come to the front place due to the active nature of work. Can the world of work life balance plans be recognized to a consciousness of societal dependableness by the employers towards their workers or to a consciousness of the competitory benefit it propose to employers? Before we can reply this inquiry, we should specify what work life balance is and different factors linked with it, which is besides the point of this paper. Definition of Work Life Balance: Work life balance is about people holding computation of control over when, where and how they work. It is a idea that, work life balance merely in the construction of what the company does for the individual. However, work life balance is a reversible attack. The other point of work life balance, which many individuals neglect, relates to what individuals do for themselves. The centre of work life balance can besides be figured as acquiring with pleasance. If a individual goes on working her or his best at work topographic point but non truly wishing this so sunniness and satisfaction can neer be accomplished. Accomplishment can be seen as cause of life while sunniness is the energy that drives that cause. As we hit a work life balance, we are non merely equilibrating our occupation and household, we are besides equilibrating our psychological and category quo and by this means equilibrating our expressive aptitude, which is the worldly ability to command you and to grip others. Org anizations can assist help work life balance for their human resources through work life activity plans and preparation. Accomplishment and sunniness at work is an of import portion of work life balance. Besides, achievement and sunniness in the three facets of his life ( i.e. friends, ego and household ) is of import as good. Work civilizations have often demanded a transition from rigidness to malleability. The cardinal regulation perchance is the turning merely around the corner that assured issues refering to the unfairness in working life and single life of an entity are being unnoticed. There is a life at place and at business and besides a life holding autonomy for trim clip. By agencies of globalisation going the criterion of the twenty-four hours, this concern seems to hold taken a back bench for moderately a piece. Work life unfairness has over a period of clip involved concern because of lifting issues related to worker s wellness, repetitiousness at work topographic point, past it degrees of productiveness and competency at the worker degree. The unfairness besides has a negative blow in th e family life of on-job people ; these can even turn out to be public jeopardies, increasing figure of divorces, poorness due to high anxiousness degrees, morning of atomic households etc. Nowadays professionals look to be extra interested in occupations that give them bigger snap at work. Working people have dissimilar demands at diverse phases of their operational life. As an result, people struggle for a great trade of balance in their on the job clip and private life. Work life balance has now turned out to be an insightful affair because it offers clear payback to organisations and its workers. Efficaciously turn toing this job can steer to a strong synergism in the on the job milieus of an organisation and its staff. Organizations can look frontward to an exceeding encouragement in competency and working hours and their private committednesss. Worker care may besides be seen as a critical driver to this. Organizations now put centre of attending on smoothing their workers who are now non considered merely working people but considered as the Human Capital of that peculiar organisation. Having options sing how work is prepared makes organisation work and life demands executable by leting workers to work in non-customary work forms and locations that improved good their single committednesss. In general value of life improves and concerns besides help from staff higher self-pride and trueness. For workers the ability to settle lissome work readyings provides a remedy to failure of accomplishments and acquaintance and the sky-scraping outgo of enlisting and saving in a competitory labour bazar. Workers who provide lithe work options straight off acquire a competitory border in the labour bazar by going worker of penchant. Advantages of Work Life Balance. ( 1 ) Enhanced versatility. Coordination exercising assorted work force can beginning a considerable alteration of Key for complication in responsibility, sourcing, and allocation of assets. Agent from contrary actions bring alone intelligence and work experience In progress purpose that are adjustable in alter to lift and autumn markets and Consumer demand. ( 2 ) Extended Service Range. A contrary geting of art and action ( for illustration.cultural, understanding and linguistic communications ) , Avow a community to afford advantage to clients on a cosmic resting topographic point. ( 3 ) Array of Aspect. A contrary labour pool that temper adequate convey alter points of position arrange a wide pool of ideas and work experiences. The composing can bind from in order That pool to allow calling of action committedness and charge of clients more competently. Understanding Delphi Class Methods

Understanding Delphi Class Methods In Delphi, a method is a procedure or function that performs an operation on an object. A class method is a method that operates on a class reference instead of an object reference. If you read between the lines, you will find that class methods are accessible even when you havent created an instance of the class (the object). Class Methods vs. Object Methods Every time you create a Delphi component dynamically, you use a class method: the Constructor. The Create constructor is a class method, as opposed to virtually all other methods youll encounter in Delphi programming, which are object methods. A class method is a method of the class, and appropriately enough, an object method is a method that can be called by an instance of the class. This is best illustrated by an example, with classes and objects highlighted in red for clarity: myCheckbox : TCheckbox.Create(nil) ; Here, the call to Create is preceded by the class name and a period (TCheckbox.). Its a method of the class, commonly known as a constructor. This is the mechanism by which instances of a class are created. The result is an instance of the TCheckbox class. These instances are called objects. Contrast the previous line of code with the following: myCheckbox.Repaint; Here, the Repaint method of the TCheckbox object (inherited from TWinControl) is called. The call to Repaint is preceded by the object variable and a period (myCheckbox.). Class methods can be called without an instance of the class (e.g., TCheckbox.Create). Class methods can also be called directly from an object (e.g., myCheckbox.ClassName). However object methods can only be called by an instance of a class (e.g., myCheckbox.Repaint). Behind the scenes, the Create constructor is allocating memory for the object (and performing any additional initialization as specified by TCheckbox or its ancestors). Experimenting With Your Own Class Methods Think of AboutBox (a custom About This Application form). The following code uses something like:procedure TfrMain.mnuInfoClick(Sender: TObject) ;beginAboutBox:TAboutBox.Create(nil) ;tryAboutBox.ShowModal;finallyAboutBox.Release;end;end;This, of course, is a very nice way to do the job, but just to make the code easier to read (and to manage), it would be much more efficient to change it to:procedure TfrMain.mnuInfoClick(Sender: TObject) ;beginTAboutBox.ShowYourself;end; The above line calls the ShowYourself class method of the TAboutBox class. The ShowYourself must be marked with the keyword class:class procedure TAboutBox.ShowYourself;beginAboutBox: TAboutBox.Create(nil) ;tryAboutBox.ShowModal;finallyAboutBox.Release;end;end; Things to Keep in Mind The definition of a class method must include the reserved word class before the procedure or function keyword that starts the definition.AboutBox form is not auto-created (Project-Options).Put AboutBox unit to the uses clause of the main form.Dont forget to declare the procedure in the interface (public) part of the AboutBox unit.

What remains would be the relevance of statistical data for the understanding of wider scale circumstances but in that same mind frame, such information that would have been put together with clear and concise data inputs and without the presence of emotionalism, or the need for sensationalism in any way. An example of statistical data which may be misleading in any way, would be the numbers calculated as part of the discussion of the current state of affairs with the nations economy. In his article Caution: Economic Statistics Are Wrong, author Floyd Norris addresses the issues that can take place, with regard to the statistical information surrounding the bigger question of economic solvency and what may be the issue(s) creating such uncertainty. Norris details that, if government statistics in recent years are to be believed, than the present growth in the economy at the time would have been at its lowest, the wages earned in the nation would have been on a continuous rate of falling and that an individuals standard of living would have stalled. Both then President Bill Clinton and opponent Bob Dole would have done their respective work to push along the ideals from the study. Food Journal Reflections Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Food Journal Reflections - Lab Report Example I had one and a half serving of vegetables and one serving of fruit per day (organic content) which I considered too little. For foods with animal products, I took a glass of milk for each of the two days. Most of the foods I ate are local foods. Most of the foods stocked in the grocery and supermarket stalls in the country are local foods. It is important to prompt the local food industry by consuming more of the local foods than the imported ones (Wang,2014). The local foods are of an immense variety each containing specific nutritional requirements. The average American eats one serving of fruit and vegetable each day which is too little to provide the necessary organic requirements. There is also an increasing amount of meats consumption in American households while foods containing other essential animal products like minerals are on the decline. A healthy diet requires that an individual eats a balanced diet every day while striving to sustain a caloric intake of about 2000 calories per day. This requires cutting down on meat consumption to at least once per two days and increase the intake of foods with organic content like fruits and vegetables to at least once per day. Along with fruits and vegetables, individuals should also strive to have at least every meal providing essential animal products apart from meat (Wang, 2014). Such products include milk, eggs et cetera. Wang, D. D., Leung, C. W., Li, Y., Ding, E. L., Chiuve, S. E., Hu, F. B., & Willett, W. C. (2014). Marketing - Essay Example However, the increasing demands of the recent market trends have compelled marketing practices to be focused on the attainment of competitive advantage in the markets. It is due to this transition that marketing has begun to be considered as a strategic management tool to devise and attain long term objectives of the organization. The attainment of goals is possible if the demands of the customers are met and they are ensured that the services and products will be delivered to them in an effective and reliable manner (Kotler et al., 2008). Therefore, it becomes evident for companies to understand their market segments and customers’ demands to ensure that successful businesses are run and they are able to deliver better products and services than their competitors. Fulfillment of customer’s needs is one of the most studied aspects of marketing. Hill et al (2003) explained that customer satisfaction is the degree of fulfillment of the customer’s requirements by an entire product or service from an organization. Customer satisfaction is considered to be the factor that provokes customers to be loyal with their brands and convey a positive image of the company in front of other consumers. Loyal customers can prove to be good publicists for companies. Loyal customers are important assets for any organization since they do not switch brands due to price differences and promotions from the competitors. Customer satisfaction is also known to be a major source for increasing revenues for organizations; therefore, it is aimed to be attained by all organizations to reduce instances of brand shifts and increase market shares. Reicheld & Sasser (1990) studied the service industry and concluded their research with the finding that a 5% increm ent in the retaining of consumers results in a significant increase of 25% to 125% in the revenues of any company. The concept of retaining customers has resulted in the evolution of relationship marketing. This concept facilitates the attainment of revenues from extended relations with customers and makes the development of customer relations an important strategic aim for the company. However, it also needs to be comprehended that the fulfillment of customer’s requirements is not the sole solution for companies in the modern markets; rather they need to keep them contended and delighted with the products and services. It would not be wrong to state that service quality bears great relevance in attaining contentment and loyalty from the customer’s side. Sportswear selling is a varied and uneven market. Retailing chains in the respective field have recorded a slow but steady rate of growth in the past. Companies are investigating to devise innovative formats and proces ses to renew their business models and expanding their businesses with greater number of stores. Sports Direct and JD have managed to attain a prominent place in the current market by achieving a commendable market share. Mintel Reports (2009) stated that a promising future can be predicted for the sportswear retailing industry in UK, especially due to the upcoming London Olympics. The marketing strategy that was adopted by Sport Direct involved the implementation of discounts on their retailing items. This strategy helped them to distinguish themselves from the competitors in the market. The quality of their products is comparable to the ones being offered by globally recognized brands like Nike, Adidas and Puma. It is relevant to investigate if marketing strategies, such as lowering the prices of products, plays an important role in the attainment of customer satisfaction. The idea that love can have a somewhat illusory nature was put forward by Rorty when she used Spinoza’s to help illustrate her concept. She argued that indulging in fantasy and unrealistic expectations of love are potentially dangerous because they distort our perception of love. Instead of an authentic experience, idolatrous love offers an illusion. Over the centuries humanity has developed certain romanticized ideas of idealized male and female roles in relation to romantic love. Simone de Beauvoir and Marilyn Friedman, in particular, discuss the dangers of such romantic ideology and their relation to male chauvinism. We live in an increasingly â€Å"cyberized† world. The Internet and social media have allowed â€Å"cyber-relationships† to become increasingly more frequent. However, Zygmunt Bauman and Hubert Dreyfus underscore the need for traditional, face-to-face interactions in building more lasting and exclusive relationships. They warn that online relationships run a very high risk of more ephemeral and promiscuous interactions, precluding lasting and substantial relationships from developing. Montaigne presents the idea that a perfect friendship emphasizes as an essential aspect of the friendship. He goes further to describe such a friendship as one characterized by such unconditional openness and trust that each individual’s need is met by the other. However, Montaigne is careful to distinguish such an ideal from homosexual love. Possible modern interpretations of this â€Å"perfect friendship† could be the ideas of â€Å"bromance† and â€Å"womance† that have become more prevalent nowadays. Touch is one of the most concrete ways in which we express love and affection for one another. Although sexual intimacy is

The Old Man and The Sea Essay Example for Free

The Old Man and The Sea Essay Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Port, Illinois. Throughout his high school career he excelled in sports, and English class. For fun Hemingway enjoyed the outdoors, which got him into fishing and camping. When he graduated he started to work for The Kansas City Star as a junior reporter. Hemingway got his style of writing from the Kansas City Star’s Style Guide for writing: â€Å"use short sentences, use short first paragraphs, use vigorous language, and be positive, not negative. † He wrote many books, one of them being The Old Man and the Sea, which was also made into a movie. In both the book and the movie, the message being conveyed was to â€Å"Never give up. † They say, â€Å"Life is a journey, it’s not where you end up but its how you got there. † (www. motivationalwellbeing. com) Both the book and the movie have similarities and differences. The book was very descriptive in which you were able to imagine and picture in your head what was actually going on. In the beginning of the book, while the Old Man went out to sea again he saw two porpoises, which he considered to be his friends out across the lonely sea. He said as if they were, playing and making jokes and love with each other. They are our brothers like the flying fish†(Hemingway 44). Also when the bird had landed on his skiff, he told the bird that he needed to be brave, and go before the hawks come. On the other hand the movie followed very closely to the book in which it was almost word for word as the book. The Old Man looked like Hemingway. Logos was shown in the movie by visually getting to see each step that the Old Man took on the boat. The music also helped you predict when something good or bad was going to happen. You were also able to see the boy cry, which is pathos. The messages that Hemingway was trying to convey was perseverance, and to never give up. Hemingway has a unique way of writing. Hemingway’s writing style included short, declarative sentences with the omission of colons, semi-colons, exclamation points, dashes or parentheses. Hemingway wanted his short sentences to build on to each other until they reached a whole storyline. Hemingway also used movie-style techniques such as â€Å"cutting from one scene to the next† quickly. His style of writing was called the â€Å"Iceberg Theory,† because his facts floated above water, and the supportive details or structures holding up the facts were out of sight. The Old Man has wrinkly skin, young eyes the color of the sea, cuts, and scars on his hands. This helped show us how much he has been through. The scars on his hands represent that he has faced hardships, but he has always gotten through them. The new cuts on his hands show that he has not given up and he is still trying. No matter what you will always fall down, but you’re the only thing stopping yourself from getting right back up and moving forward. Throughout his life, he has been presented with challenges to test his strength and endurance. The marlin with which he struggles for three days represents his greatest challenge. Relentlessly fighting off the sharks over and over again, keeping as much of the marlin that he can savage, until he gets back to land, and not letting any outside forces put him down. The Old Man dreaming about Africa and lions represents him reminiscing on his youth and purity, but is now an elderly man, getting weaker by the day. The boy, who had first gone on the Old Man’s boat when he was five, has been a friend to the old man ever since. The boy would always go fishing with the Old Man, but his parents told their son he was no longer on his boat because he had the worst bad luck and he had not caught a fish in over 80 days. It is as if the boy and the Old Man have switched places by the boy being the caretaker for the Old Man, â€Å"the father figure†, and the Old Man being the one who is cared for. Joe DiMaggio also played a role in the storyline even though you never saw him; he was the Old Mans hero. The Old Man worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward DiMaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. Hemingway’s unique style of writing allows readers to easily visualize the plot, as if it was a movie. This is done through short sentences that build on one another. This also allows his books, such as The Old Man and the Sea, to be created into movies that are easily comparable. His use of metaphors and descriptive writing make this possible. Through the use of logos and pathos, Hemingway successfully conveyed the message of perseverance. Over and over again the Old Man was tried, but he never gave up.

Domestic Violence in the LGBT Community Reflection

Domestic Violence in the LGBT Community Reflection On June 12, 1997. This day was started out like any other day. But later this tragedy would change the direction of my life forever. A domestic shooting took place and I was the victim. The offender and I were close friends. We were sharing an apartment together. Most of the people in the community would see us together on a daily basis, some of the neighbors would make it their mission to watch us, maybe because we did not pose a threat, and we would always speak. My roommate also had children, 2 girls, and boy ages 14,13 and 9. They lived with their grandparents at the time. The shooting happening because my roommate accuses me of cheating and it escalated from there. She had driven out to my job earlier that day and confronting me with a shirt that had lipsticks stains on the collar. Of course, I denied the aggregation. When I returned home from work she was their still anger from earlier. We started yelling at one another back and forth and she grabs my pistol. The pistol that was used was a 22 caliber it was purchased from a friend it was not registered. We often get into heated arguments with each other and they usually cool down. But this time it was different, it was something more underneath the surface. The bullets were just purchased for that pistol a week ago before the shooting, I did not think it was loaded. When she fired the weapon, I was setting on the edge of the bed, when my head flew back on the bed and blood starting running out of the side of my mouth. We were both in shock me not knowing the severity of the gunshot wound and her standing frozen in denial and frantic that my famiIly was going to kill her. She yelling at me to sit up and I could not without help, she comes over and helps me up, now blood is running faster out of my mouth, and I am trying quietly to whisper to her to call 911, reassuring her that she did not mean to shoot me. At this time everyone nearby in the apartment complex heard the commotion and start ed to stand around outside as the Police and EMS arrived. The landlord knew my mother, and I whisper to her not to let my mother know what had happened. Because she would have been devasted. I also told the police that I was not going to press charges, the officers looks at me and shakes his head. She had a family and, I did not want to see her children suffer, because of the mistake that she had made. They transported me to Cape Fear Valley hospital. I was reluctant to give out any information to them concerning contacting my family. My worries were my family, especially my mother, I could not take my family through this ordeal. They were notified, by who, I am not sure, I passed out at that time. We all know that domestic violence has been around for decades even centuries, mainly among heterosexual, now it has entered into the LBGQT community. Most of the time heavy drinking plays a role, in domestic violence, such as, in my situation, we were both heavy drinkers, and she had been drinking at the time of the shooting. Men and Women are now experienced abuse and violence in relationships with their partners. Law enforcement, government agencies, and the general population acknowledge that domestic violence is a serious public health problem (Domestic Violence in the LGBT Community, 2011). Researcher has acknowledged that domestic violence among same-sex couples is similar to heterosexual couples. But because of certain laws, domestic violence victims in same-sex relationships are not identified as heterosexual relationships they can not get the help they need. This is due to the lack of legal recognition of same-sex relationships, law enforcements failure to identify and properly handle domestic violence cases involving people of the same sex, and the shortage of resources available to victims of same-sex partner domestic abuse (Domestic Violence in the LGBT Community, 2011). In most situation, shelters can not provide a safe place of care for gay men and lesbian because of certain legalities in our courts systems. During my process with my battle back from my shooting. I would not identifies us as a couple. The shooting was due to an argument among friends. The shame of being label as lesbians and getting shot by your lover was not good in an African America family and cultural not for me. My family was concern about my ability to function normally, physical and financially after this had happened. We had worked out an agreement between the two of us that she would pay my car payments until I was able to return back to work. She started out for a while and then stop. If it is not documented by the courts you really do not have a legal right or obligation for the offender to comply with the agreement. elijah mccoy and lloyd war :: essays research papers

Idols, everyone needs them or at least just someone to look up to and admire. People need something to look forward to, aspire towards some kind of goal – basically ambition. For Minorities, specifically African Americans in engineering, role models in the engineering field aren’t glorified. It is not because people feel they are unimportant it is because they just haven’t been informed. For example many people know the clichà © The Real McCoy but they don’t know where it comes from; or why it has the connotations it does. Truth is McCoy was an African American mechanical engineer whose parents were runaway slaves in the early 20th century. It almost sounds like an oxymoron, a black engineer at a time when blacks weren’t even allowed to go to certain schools or sit at certain bars. However we still use that famous coined phrase and don’t realize the significance involved in its origins. Present day role models are also important, our histor y is one thing, but it is more conceivable when it can be seen in real life. Conceivable meaning easier to understand and recognize the potential opportunities this individual created. Lloyd Ward only the second African American to become a CEO of a major company. The thing about Ward is his willingness to succeed and ability to do so in untraditional fashion. Ward is also a mechanical engineer whose background is almost as unbelievable as his rise to the top. This report is about two of the greatest men who have ever lived; their accomplishments should be viewed as goals that we all can value and maybe one day copy. First a historical look at one of the most prolific and ingenious engineers of all time – who never stopped working and fulfilling his dreams. Elijah McCoy (1844-1929) was an American inventor born in Colchester, Ontario, Canada, to parents who had escaped from slavery in Kentucky in 1837. McCoy was best known for his inventions of devices used to lubricate heavy machinery automatically. McCoy went to Edinburgh, Scotland, at age 15 and studied mechanical engineering for five years. When he came home he became a railroad fireman on the Michigan State Railroad. Back then steam locomotives had to stop at intervals so that the fireman could oil their pistons, levers, and connecting pins. About 1870, while living in the town of Ypsilanti, Michigan, McCoy began to experiment with automatic lubricators for steam engines.

Imagination and the Holocaust Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research Pap

Imagination and the Holocaust The great secret of morals is love; or a going out of our own nature, and an identification of ourselves with the beautiful which exists in thought, action, or person, not our own. A man, to be greatly good, must imagine intensely and comprehensively; he must put himself in the place of another and of many others; the pains and pleasures of his species must become his own. -- Percy Bysshe Shelley, "A Defense of Poetry" I believe that truly humane learning can't help but expand the constricted boundaries of human sympathy, of social tolerance. Maybe the truest thing to be said about racism is that it represents a profound failure of imagination. -- Henry Louis Gates, Jr. "Integrating the American Mind" The imagination and the ability to empathize with others is the key to living a wider life, a key to escaping the prison of a limited self. But, imagination and identification are also menacing. As we read and listen to the words of survivors, as we study the Holocaust from all points of view, our imaginations threaten us. As I pick up Elie Wiesel's novel Night, I take the Holocaust in my hands, and I hear children's' voices in the dark. I am afraid for them and for myself. First, I am afraid my imagination will fail me, and I will be overwhelmed. The terror and humiliation of the Holocaust may so numb me that I will go into "shock." I will isolate myself, deny everything -- suffering, empathy, mercy, family, God. I will experience what Wiesel experienced when his father was struck and he did nothing (36-37), or, in the end, I will abandon my father. Wiesel says to me, "I awoke on January 29 at dawn. In my father's place lay another invalid. They must have taken him away before dawn an... ...elling and the Journey to Wholeness. New York: Bantam, 1992. Pagis, Dan. Satisfied employees, however, refers to a feeling when they have completed a job or something that feels that they have done their job well. Either side of the argument will somehow make money, promotion and/or will get benefits. They're closely related that job satisfaction can be a motivation and/or they do it for the money, promotion and/or benefits but their satisfaction will come naturally. 2. Briefly discuss several specific actions that supervisors can take to improve employee motivation. No matter how big or small the company, motivating the team is really important to business. When people lose their motivation can create less productive, less of an asset to the business. Either way, employees' motivation will affect the overall success in a company. Praising them when they're doing well is probably the most common and most effective as a motivation factor. Providing opportunities for growth such as adding responsibilities or challenges. 3. Explain why many managers frequentl y raise the following questions: â€Å"Why didn't you do what I told you to do? † Managers have higher position than the employees being managed. Therefore, they have the privilege to make decisions and to say something like â€Å"Why didn't you do what I told you to do? † They are more experience and probably have the education to uphold the position. Since they are more experience and probably been there longer than the employees, they have gotten use to the methods they have been using. Some just don't have the time to change the nature in workplace, why change something that is not broken. Or maybe because some managers has a superiority complex and thinks that the way he wants something done is the best way. 4.Discuss the following statement: Meanings are in people, not in words. This can be explained in a lot of ways but I believe that Meanings is a personal preference. Just like the bible, it can be interpreted differently from other religion and culture even tho ugh the words are exactly the same. Don't assume people know what you mean when you tell them something. The meaning is something that will depend on their own experiences, what was learnt by others. People is what gives words meaning.. Hopefully that made any sense but this is how I believe it can actually interpreted.
